Teaching & Learning

Curriculum Vision

St Mary’s Catholic Primary School is a learning community in which all students are challenged to reach their full potential, academically, socially, physically, emotionally and spiritually. We believe that all students have the right to a relevant, holistic and quality education.

Through innovative and engaging curriculum delivery, students are safely supported to take risks, make mistakes, learn at their own rate and therefore celebrate their uniqueness.

Curriculum

Curriculum at St Mary’s is guided and mandated by the Australian Curriculum and the Early Years Curriculum Guidelines. As an effective Catholic school, we provide a curriculum which has a specific Catholic quality. There is a priority for Religious Education both at the formal level in communicating the Catholic story, and the informal level by the infusion of the whole curriculum with the values of the Gospel.

The Curriculum is delivered using a whole school approach to teaching and learning; using quality data to inform that teaching and learning and the establishment of high expectations for each student. Teachers use a variety of methods and strategies to meet the needs of the learners, and we provide the students with explicit and timely feedback.

The students at St Mary’s undertake studies in the following key learning areas in line with the Australian curriculum Version 9 and the Diocesan Catholic Education Office.

Students in P-6 also participate in a STEM lesson each week taught by a specialist teacher and also have two full STEM days each semester. St Mary’s participates in local STEM and Robotics competitions each year.

The different strands of The Arts are taught by a specialist teacher for students in Prep to Year 6 over a two-year period.

The Year 4 students are part of an Ensemble music program which is run by Emmaus College staff. All students learn to play an instrument from the Woodwind or Strings family.
